Getting started
- Open the app. It starts completely empty — no sample data, no fake balances.
- Onboarding offers a set of starter categories. Accept them or skip and build your own.
- Add your accounts in Manage → Accounts, with their current balances.
- Add your fixed commitments under Recurring — salary, rent, subscriptions. They post to your ledger automatically from then on.
- Use the + button for everyday spending as it happens.
There is a full guide inside the app: tap the ? button at the top-left of the home screen.
Common questions
Can I connect my bank directly?
No, and that's on purpose. Services like Plaid work by routing your bank credentials and transaction history through a third party's servers, which is the opposite of how this app is built. Instead, export a CSV statement from your bank and import it in Settings → Bank Connections. Columns like date, description and amount are detected automatically, and you review every row before anything is saved.
How do I move my data to a new iPhone?
Leave iCloud Sync on and sign in to the same Apple Account on the new device — your data appears once syncing completes. If you prefer not to use iCloud, export a CSV from Settings before switching.
My data isn't syncing between devices.
Check that both devices are signed in to the same Apple Account, that iCloud Drive is on in iOS Settings, that PennyPilot is allowed to use iCloud, and that Settings → iCloud Sync is on in the app. Syncing also needs a network connection and can take a minute after a large change. The app's Settings screen reports the current sync state and the reason when iCloud has refused.
I sent a split invitation and the other person can't open it.
The person you invite needs PennyPilot installed and needs to be signed in to iCloud on their device. Invitation links open the app directly; if the link opens a browser instead, install the app first and tap the link again.
What does "normalize" or cadence alignment actually do?
It re-expresses recurring amounts in one cadence so they're comparable. A $60 quarterly bill shown biweekly becomes about $9.23 — which is what it really costs you per paycheck. Nothing about the underlying amount or schedule changes; only how it's displayed.
Can I get my data out?
Yes. Settings → Export writes your data out as CSV, which opens in Numbers, Excel or any spreadsheet. Nothing in the app is locked in.
How do I delete everything?
Settings → Erase All Data permanently wipes the app's data from your device. If iCloud Sync is on, that deletion propagates to your iCloud copy too. It cannot be undone, so export first if you might want the data back.
Is my financial data sent anywhere?
Not to us — there is no server on our end. With iCloud Sync on, your data is mirrored to your own private iCloud database under your Apple Account, which we cannot access. The privacy policy spells out exactly what happens in each case.
The AI insights section isn't showing up.
AI insights use Apple Intelligence, which needs a supported device with the feature turned on in iOS Settings, and the on-device model finished downloading. On devices that can't run it, the app hides the feature and shows calculated insights instead.
